| Try Chinese Medicine:
Because of the high incidence of
viral hepatitis in China, traditional Chinese medicine has a long
history of treating chronic forms of the disease with individualized
herbal formulas. I'm especially interested in modern Chinese
medicine, which was developed recently in China by MDs who match
traditional Chinese treatments to Western disease conditions.
I've encourage many hepatitis C patients to use herbal formulas
developed by on such practitioner: Qingcai Zhang, a licensed
acupuncturist and Chinese -trained MD who runs a Chinese medicine
clinic in New York City and specializes in the treatment of chronic
hepatitis. He uses mainly herbs, which have few side effects and
appear to be quite effective: Patients typically report lower levels
of ALT (a measure of liver inflammation) within two to three months,
plus an improvement in symptoms like fatigue, nausea, and poor
appetite. Some patients use these herbal formulas as an alternative
to conventional drug treatment, while others say the herbs lessen
the side effects of interferon therapy.
